Reaching for the Sun

Well, it has been a long time since I have posted any new work. I have recently felt the need to work larger and to start a series. Sometimes trying to decide which direction to go in painting can be an emotional one. This is my first attempt at a series of Flowers. I really enjoyed trying to capture the movement I saw in the petals.

Composition-wise, this is my favorite of the flowers so far. My eye is pulled consistently to the near-vertical petal just left of center, and the texture of the seed head right around that. All of the other textures and lines and tones create a sensation of radiating delicacy and brittle grace, but always my eye goes back to the center, as to the eyes of a portrait.I think the violet tone underneath the more intensely orange petal there is the color contrast that draws me the most. The suggestion of light from the right side adds to the feeling of a portrait.Great job.
